It suddenly occurred to me that the text-book answers were just a guideline, a small group of people’s interpretation of what must be.

I re-read the poem again, this time reading it from my perspective and found a different interpretation. With my new-found clarity, I challenged my English Teacher and told him I disagreed with the text-book and that there is no right or wrong interpretation of the poem. He argued with me of course but I remained adamant that everyone who reads a poem will interpret it differently.

I wasn’t overly surprised when I received my exam results and found that I had failed because I did not adhere to “the rules”. Twenty six years later my opinion hasn’t changed at all and I still remember well, my teacher’s parting words, “Never stop arguing – one day you might be right”.
